Google has launched the first Developer Preview of Android 16 earlier than expected. The company now aims to release the final version in Q2 2025, moving away from its usual Q3 release window.
The new schedule includes two major updates in 2025 – the main Android 16 release in Q2 and a feature update in Q4.
The preview brings a new photo picker that apps can use directly, making it easier to select and share photos. Apps can now also handle medical records through Health Connect, with user permission.
You can install the preview on Pixel devices from the 6 series onwards, including the Fold and Tablet. If you have Android 15 QPR2 Beta 1, you’ll need to reset your device before installing Android 16.

If you’re not a developer, it’s better to wait for the public beta in early 2025. The current preview might have bugs and unstable features. Google will keep improving the system through updates until the final release.
The new schedule shows Google wants to get new features to users faster and reduce differences between Android versions on different devices.
