Now You Can Use AI to Create Images on Google Docs

Google has taken a significant leap forward by integrating its Imagen 3 AI image generator into Google Docs, making document creation more visually engaging than ever before.

Google Workspace Updates posted that when you use Google Docs on the web, you’ll find a new “Help me create an image” option in the Insert menu. This tool lets you describe the image you want, and Imagen 3 will bring your vision to life with exceptional quality, sharpness, and color accuracy.

The new feature offers flexibility in customization, allowing you to choose between Square, Wide, or Tall aspect ratios. You can also select from various artistic styles including Photography, Vector art, Sketch, Watercolor, and Cyberpunk, or try your luck with the “I’m feeling lucky” option.

For those working in pageless mode, Imagen 3 also enhances the Cover image feature. You can now generate stunning cover images that span the entire width of your document, perfect for resumes, invitations, or client pitches.

The rollout is currently underway for Google Workspace customers with eligible plans, including Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, Education Premium, or Google One AI Premium add-on. The feature has started rolling out from 15th November and will be widely available by the end of the year.


To create a cover image, you can: 

  1. Go to Insert > select Cover image > select Help me create an image, or
  2. Type “@” followed by Cover image and then select Help me create an image.

To add an image: 

  1. Go to Insert
  2. Select Image
  3. Select Help me create an image
  4. Type in an image description (optionally select a style for your image)
  5. Click Create, then, you will see generated options
  6. Select the one you like and it will be added to your document.

This integration democratizes visual content creation, enabling everyone, regardless of artistic ability, to create compelling documents with custom-generated images that perfectly match their vision.
